Kick back this spring semester at Pacific’s Take 5 Jazz Club

Art is an essential part of human culture. It’s important on many levels such as self-awareness and self-expression, but it also helps us feel free, refreshed and even exhilarated. And that’s exactly what jazz music is about. So, take a break from your busy life because we’ve got just the venue for you!

Take 5 Jazz Club is an off-campus music venue which has been operated for over a decade by Pacific’s Department of Jazz Studies inside the historic Valley Brew on the Miracle Mile in Stockton. The name aptly describes its relaxed, casual atmosphere, but it also pays tribute to “Take Five” a well-known jazz tune written by Paul Desmond, a saxophonist for the trail-blazing Dave Brubeck Quintet. One of Pacific’s most distinguished alumni, Dave Brubeck ’42 put our university on the map with his excellence in jazz and as one of the first jazz ambassadors and cultural diplomats in the 1950s and 60s.

“Take 5 is a true gem in Stockton,” said the club’s co-founder and jazz studies director Patrick Langham. “You might have to go all the way to San Francisco to find anything similar. We play only live jazz, really anything from Latin to straight jazz and from standards to original tunes written by our students and faculty.”

The venue is a short 10-minute walk from Pacific campus (find directions here). The doors are open to all ages, 7-9 p.m. on Thursdays through the end of April. General admission is $15 while students with a valid school ID pay only $5.
